This past summer, I had the opportunity to photograph every specialized team of the Vancouver Fire Department for the Rosenbauer Group.
This was my favourite day of commercial photography so far in my career.
Based in Austria, Rosenbauer is the leading manufacturer of fire trucks and emergency rescue equipment.
The Vancouver Fire Department is one of the first rescue services teams in the world to receive an electric EV fire truck. When I photographed these images, it was en route on a tanker ship crossing the Atlantic Ocean.
The images I captured are for Rosenbauer's annual calendar, which highlights notable fire departments from around the world that receive one of their 3,000+ fire trucks manufactured each year.
As the 2024 calendar has been published, I'm excited to finally be able to share the images we created.
I stood atop the cranes of the Port of Vancouver, saw emergency rescue evacuations, automobile extractions, and the hazmat team in action, joined the marine team to inspect Vancouver's Celebration of Lights floating firework barge, and went on ride-a-longs with two fire halls (including the Downtown Eastside's: Canada's busiest firehall with over 1600 calls per month – the average is 30-60).
A little-known fact is that the VFD is battling more municipal fires per month than ever in its recorded history. In June 2023 (the month before I worked with the team), the previous record was broken by over 30%. They see 10-15 fires PER DAY in Vancouver.
Please do your part to stay fire-safe and support the VFD. They are the most rooted non-profit organization in our community. Thank you to everyone at VFRS and my producer Lisa Kaulback who helped coordinate this day and facilitate these exciting moments.
