Scooters are products of personality. They’re a statement about who you are, where you’re going, and where you’re looking.
In street photography, seeking a subject that tells a story is the focus. Scooters and their drivers become an organic focus. For a split second as they pass by – or the few moments you catch while stopped – they offer a story of those driving it; stories that are otherwise hidden by the doors and roof of cars.
When parked on the sidewalk, leaned against a wall, or balanced on a street corner, scooters on their own offer a glimpse into the lives of their owners. They leave questions that only the imagination can answer.
This collection of street photography images was captured in Montréal and Québec City, Québec in late 2022. Once named “New France”, Québec’s uniquely French and European heritage sets it apart from the rest of Canada. At one point almost becoming its own country in as recently as 1995, Montréalers and Québecois are a capsule of culture not found anywhere else in North America.
These photos are meant to foster stories of their owners, their riders, and the lineage many of these vintage scooters have passed through.
